Spirit and Substance is a group of people who believe that we all could use more understanding of the world and of each other. We enjoy working on philosophy, art, and social projects while living and playing together.
Our name comes from our belief that the worlds of spirit and of substance must be joined together to be complete. Spirit reflects our commitment to dreams, ideals, and pursuit of beauty in all forms. Substance is what grounds us and keeps us committed to the reality of the world we share.
Our community is comprised of two parts: the house and the extended community. The house is a space for co-living and creation and is our hub. We share meals, cook, laugh, and build the future we want to see. The extended community will include our friends and those who wish to contribute. We will gather periodically at the house for fun and thought-provoking events.
We are in the formation phase and are looking for others who share our desire to live true to ourselves and who wish to live rich and joyful lives together with passionate and unique people. Whether you’re an intellectual, an artist, an entrepreneur, or pursuing your dreams in your own way, if you are committed to living a full life and are intrigued by our mission, we would love to hear from you!
We have a massive, century-old, and beautiful six bedroom house in the Berkeley Hills with views of San Francisco and the Bay and plenty of space for gathering and creating both indoors and out.
Close to both nature and the city, we are extremely close to the beautiful Live Oak, Cordonices, and Indian Rock parks, and less than a 30 minute walk to UC Berkeley and BART.
